Fluoride helps protect your tooth enamel, the hard outer coating on teeth. It can also reverse the early stages of tooth decay. Learn more about the benefits and uses of fluoride.
Fluoridated water
There are no known negative health problems that come from drinking or using water with fluoride.
The only effect of swallowing too much fluoride is dental fluorosis. Dental fluorosis changes the look of your teeth. Mild to moderate fluorosis is only a surface change, causing white specks to appear on the surface of teeth. Teeth with fluorosis are actually stronger and less likely to decay than other teeth.
The easiest way to avoid dental fluorosis is to make sure neither you nor your children swallow toothpaste.

Community water fluoridation |
More than 70 years of research shows that community water fluoridation (CWF) is safe. We check drinking water to make sure that it follows the water quality standards in the Safe Drinking Water Act. We add the ideal amount of fluoride to the water supply of six Durham Region communities: Ajax, Brooklin, Courtice, Oshawa, Pickering, Whitby. We believe that CWF is a safe, effective, and low-cost way of preventing cavities for everyone in the community. The money we spend on community water fluoridation means lower dental costs for Durham Region families. |
