As a parent or caregiver, it is up to you to decide what foods you will give to your child. Your child will decide what foods they want, and how much they want to eat.
Some children are picky eaters. At times they will not want to eat at all. Remember that every child has different eating habits.
Tips for picky eaters
- Offer regular meals and snacks. Children who eat three meals and up to three snacks every day are more likely to be hungry and try new foods.
- Choose a meal that has foods from all four food groups.
- Offer at least one food you know your child likes.
- It can take eight to 10 times before your child will try something new.
- Eating together at the table will help your child learn healthy eating habits.
- Make mealtimes fun and talk to your child.
- Your child's eating habits can change every day.
- Trust that your child's body will tell them if they are hungry or full.
- Do not use toys, books, television or cellphones to get your child to eat.
- Do not use tricks, punishment or rewards to get your child to eat.
