Life is expensive

Attend a Mobile ID and Benefits Access Hub to learn about tax credits and benefits, and for help with identification, getting the Canada Learning Bond and more!

Click to watch a YouTube video about how Mobile ID and Benefits Access Hubs can help you     Watch a video to learn more about the services available at a Mobile ID and Benefits Access Hub.

Find a Mobile ID and Benefits Access Hub near you.

Did you know that there are more than 40 government credits and benefits that could boost your income, like the Canada Child Benefit, GST credit, and more? However, accessing these benefits can feel like going through a maze.

It’s hard to know what you might be eligible for and how to apply. To unlock benefits, you need to file your taxes, even if you have low income or no income. You may also need a Social Insurance Number and other identification, like a birth certificate.

All of this can feel impossible to do, but Mobile ID and Benefits Access Hubs can help make it easy.

How a Mobile ID and Benefits Access Hub can help

Please read below to find out what to bring to a Hub:

1. Get or replace identification

Service Canada will be onsite to issue Social Insurance Numbers (SIN). Please bring:

  • Primary ID (e.g., Birth Certificate, Certificate of Canadian Citizenship, etc.); and
  • Any other original forms of federal or provincial ID you may have (e.g., passport, driver’s license).
  • Visit Social Insurance Number – Apply - Canada.ca to learn more about what to bring to get your SIN.

Help will be onsite to apply for Birth Certificates.

  • You must know information about the birth registration (e.g., names, city of birth, and other birth information).

2. Open a free RESP and access the Canada Learning Bond for your child.

The Canada Learning Bond is a free grant from the federal government for post-secondary school. Eligible children can receive up to $2,000, deposited into a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) account.

To apply for the Canada Learning Bond at a hub, please bring Social Insurance Numbers (SINs) and other ID for both the child and the parent/caregiver.

  • For the parent/caregiver, this can be valid photo ID (excluding health cards); for the child, it can be a Birth Certificate.

3. Free tax filing

See event details below for where tax filing will be offered and for how to register for tax filing at an event. You will be advised which documents to bring with you.

Learn more about free tax filing, who is eligible to file their taxes for free at a CVITP tax clinic, and about which documents to bring with you.

4. Learn about benefits that can boost your income

Service Canada will be at the hubs to share about benefits that may be available to you, such as:

  • Canada Pension Plan/Old Age Security
  • Canada Child Benefit
  • Canada Workers Benefit
  • Disability Benefits
  • And more!

5. Sign up for the new Canadian Dental Care Plan

Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) – The new CDCP will help pay a portion of the cost for a wide range of oral health care services. Eligible seniors, children under 18, and adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate who have received a letter in the mail from the government of Canada can get help at a hub to sign-up for this benefit. Bring your Social Insurance Number and the letter to the hub.

Mobile ID and Benefits Access Hubs offer tax filing through the federal Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP).

To register for a session, you must have a modest annual income and simple tax situation.

A modest income for a one-person family is up to $35,000. For a two-person family, it is up to $45,000. The income threshold increases by $2,500 for each additional person in your household.

Tax situations that are not simple, include tax returns with:

  • Self-employment income or employment expenses
  • Business income and expenses
  • Rental income and expense
  • Interest income over $1,000
  • Capital gains or losses
  • Bankruptcy in the current tax year (or year before, if the return has not yet been filed)
  • Deceased person
  • Foreign property (T1135)
  • Foreign income

Please be sure to bring all required documents to file your taxes, including but not limited to:

  • Valid photo identification
  • Social Insurance Number or Individual Tax Number
  • Mailing address
  • Last year’s Notice of Assessment or income tax return document(s)
  • Income tax slips from all sources (e.g., T4, T5007, T4A, etc.)
  • Information about any dependents
  • Receipts (e.g., rental, property tax, medical, charitable donation, tuition, child care, RRSP, etc.).

Quotes and information about the impact of attending a Mobile Benefit Hub event - "I've been trying to do this for five years" (attendee speaking about getting their child's SIN in order to get the Canada Learning Bond); "It was worth the drive. I got everything I needed" (attendee who drove from another community); "At events between 2019 and 2024, Durham residents opened a total of 223 RESPs and submitted 299 Canada Learning Bond applications. This could mean up to $598,000 deposited into RESPs to help local children save for post-secondary education (assuming maximum benefit amount)".
