Be prepared for emergencies this summer

Whitby, Ontario – The Durham Emergency Management Office wants you to be prepared for severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and other potential emergencies this summer.
In 2017, there were 14 severe thunderstorm warnings in Durham. During the past 10 years tornadoes have touched down in Ashburn, Bowmanville, and twice in Orono. New designated smoking area at Durham Region Headquarters

Whitby, Ontario – The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department, would like to advise the public that smoking and the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) on Regional Headquarters property is now restricted to a designated smoking area.
When: Effective Tuesday, July 3.
Where: The new dedicated smoking area at the Region of Durham Headquarters (605 Rossland Road East, Whitby), is located on the south side of the building, on the eastern edge of the parking lot.

Whitby, Ontario – The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department would like to advise residents of eastbound lane restrictions on Victoria Street East (Regional Road 22), west of Thickson Road South (Regional Road 26), in Whitby.
When: July 9 to 20.
Where: Victoria Street East, west of Thickson Road South, in the Town of Whitby.
Why: To safely install a watermain in support of new development.

Region of Durham testing Public Alerting System

Whitby, Ontario – Residents and businesses are advised that the Region of Durham will be conducting its annual spring testing of the Public Alerting System within the 10-kilometre area around the Darlington and Pickering Nuclear Generating stations.
When:Testing is scheduled to take place during regular daytime business hours on May 9 for indoor notification (automated emergency telephone dialing system), and on May 10 for outdoor siren activation. The outdoor sirens will sound for up to one minute.

Maintenance work will affect entrances to Durham Regional Headquarters

Whitby, Ontario – The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department would like to advise visitors to the Regional Headquarters building at 605 Rossland Road East in Whitby that the entrances to the building will be impacted on a rotating basis while landscaping work is completed. Alternate entrances and exits to the building should be used during this time.
When: November 30 through December 2, unfavourable weather conditions may influence the work schedule.
