Winter 2023
Durham Region has initiated a Workplace Modernization project. The initial intent of the project was to update the physical workspace to optimize the existing building and defer expansion requirements for several years. A hybrid work model was always proposed as part of this strategy, and the quick pivot to remote working during the pandemic solidified the potential for this model.
However, there is a need to find a balance between remote work and office presence. Redefining the purpose of the office in a way that encourages a regular presence for all staff, balanced with remote working, is necessary. As part of defining the purpose of the office, consideration of how a positive and inclusive organizational culture can be improved and maintained is necessary. This would extend to addressing the sense of organizational disconnect that some staff have expressed, along with developing strategies to ensure that staff feel included and part of the organization.
There are many models being discussed; a made for Durham strategy is necessary. Specifically, this project provided guidance on:
- The purpose of the office in the hybrid work model that encourages a balance between remote and office presence with purpose.
- The importance of informal interactions and how that can be promoted amongst teams in a hybrid work model, including leveraging technology to promote organizational culture.
- How to improve the overall sense of organizational belonging for staff that cannot work in a hybrid environment, participate in alternate work arrangements or that work outside of the Headquarters and have expressed a sense of disconnect from the overall organization.
