Clarington has a microclimate for growing apples due to the warm lake effect from Lake Ontario. This makes Newcastle and the surrounding area the optimal location for growing high quality apples. If you have ever been to Newcastle, you know orchards dominate the beautiful countryside. Between this and being a clear leader in apple production, Newcastle, Ontario has been named the Apple Capital of Canada.
All About Apples
Durham Region produces 13 per cent of Ontario’s apples with 2,100 acres in production—and Clarington alone leads our region’s apple production with 1,950 acres in production. This is almost 3,500 soccer fields worth of orchards!
But that doesn’t mean the only apple production is in Durham’s southeast. North Durham is thriving when it comes to producing some of the most flavourful apples and apple products. Cider and pick-your-own is a north Durham specialty. Check out Durham Tourism’s Guide to North Durham Cideries or the Durham Farm Fresh pick-your-own directory to plan your next apple outing.

A-list Innovation
Agriculture innovation is blooming in Durham, just like our apples! Durham is home to the largest privately owned apple farm in the country, Algoma Orchards. They service many apple farms in Durham by purchasing and distributing local apples, as well as growing their own. In addition to selling fresh apples to grocery stores across the countryside, Algoma also further processes their apples with a state-of-the-art juice press, and recently opened their new cidery, Lakeshore Cider!
Apple orchards in Durham are known to lead the way in trialling some of the newest, up-and-coming innovations and technology in fruit production. Take Vivid Machines’ work in Durham’s apple orchards as an example. Our farmers can now measure fruit size, count and more, in real time to make the best management decisions possible and bring the best quality fruit to our markets. And look at Geissberger Farmhouse Cider. Their mobile custom apple cider press can press and package apples remotely to ensure farms of all kinds are able to create products with their apples.
Apple innovation goes beyond the farm level. Durham College is home to its very own apple orchard! Whether it is testing new orchard management and agricultural practices, or the latest culinary apple innovation in the kitchen with baking, canning, cooking and brewing at the college’s Bistro 67,we know the future of fruit is in good hands.
Celebrating Cider
