Ajax and the surrounding area have a new gem to celebrate, Palais Noir Events Inc.—a boutique wedding and event venue. Sandra Colaire is Executive Director and CEO. A proud mother of four and a dedicated entrepreneur, Sandra’s journey from an Accredited Decorator and Certified Wedding Planner to owning her own space in the events arena has been challenging and extremely gratifying.
“Establishing Palais Noir is my dream come true, second only to my wonderful family,” notes Sandra.
Her family of high achievers includes eldest daughter, Nikkita Holder, a two-time Olympic hurdler and bronze medalist in the 2015 Pan Am Games. All of Sandra’s children have graduated from universities in the United States on scholarships.
Now, or forever hold your peace
Fifteen years ago, Sandra began decorating events for friends, family, and clients. However, the demands of travel to event locations took a toll, especially with the restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was during this uncertain time that Sandra began to focus on her long-held dream of owning her own event venue.
“I knew I couldn’t die without trying to do the thing that I've always wanted, to have my special something—my own event space,” explains Sandra.
Encouraged by her husband Lincoln, whom she describes as “the most amazing man” and her biggest supporter, Sandra took steps toward her next level as an entrepreneur.
Finding the Perfect Space
Opening Palais Noir came with unexpected twists. Sandra initially had her heart set on a different location and found the current space lacking in charm.
"The place was a little run-down, with low ceilings, ugly tile floors, and garish yellow walls," Sandra recalled. However, Lincoln's optimism helped her see its potential. After a year of major investments and renovations, Sandra transformed the space into an exceptionally lovely and attractive event space.
A Grand Opening to Remember
Palais Noir’s grand opening on July 9, 2024, was a testament to Sandra's "go big or go home" philosophy. Outside the event featured a steel band, a red carpet, and a vintage car for photos, and inside over 200 guests attended throughout the day, including dignitaries from Ajax, who enjoyed a live band, soloist singer, hors d’oeuvres and a DJ’s selection of music.
“With Palais Noir, I can provide a beautiful, high-quality space where my community can celebrate life's important moments without the stresses typically associated with planning and hosting an event,” says Sandra.
She does this by providing premium services at competitive prices, ensuring her community gets the best experience possible for a variety of life events including baby showers, birthdays, weddings, and celebrations of life.
Overcoming Operational Challenges
Operating a public venue came with its own challenges. Health regulations require strict adherence to safety standards, such as serving hot food at specific temperatures. Sandra addressed this by installing a brand-new industrial kitchen and employing chefs to ensure all food safety codes are met.
"We adhere to the rules, they’re crucial to ensure everyone's safety," she emphasized.
Additionally, Sandra learned that all of her decorative draping needed to be fire-rated (resist the spread of fire); which she quickly adapted with the help of one of her industry contacts, ensuring that all draping was both beautiful and safe.
A Community-Centered Space
Sandra has created an event space that Durham can be proud of, offering an inclusive environment for everyone. With her industry expertise, Palais Noir provides a full-service experience, ensuring seamless, stress-free events for all types of celebrations.
Palais Noir is more than just an event venue—it’s a reflection of Sandra’s dedication and love for her community. As Durham embraces Palais Noir, it’s clear that Sandra’s dream has become a beautiful reality.
