Connecting back to our roots
Farmers have been the stewards of Durham Region’s land for longer than any of us can remember. Farming and food production is the backbone of what our region is built on, and to this day is the fabric of many rural communities.
Farmers’ markets have a rich history in our region. It’s one of the many ways farmers, in the past and present, have sold their home-grown fruits, veggies, meats, preserves, baked goods and more.
It isn’t just about the farmers selling their products, it’s also about connecting with the deep farming roots of our communities, getting to know how food is grown and raised, and to experience the feeling of enjoying some of the freshest food available.
The farmers’ market experience
Shopping at a farmers’ market is so much more than picking up food—it’s an experience. You can smell the variety of fresh food as you walk through the vendors and see the colour of the seasons—from the green asparagus in the spring to the vibrant colours of heritage carrots and potatoes in the summer. There is so much to heighten the senses and bring a smile to your face at the farmers’ market.
It’s an opportunity to enjoy a peaceful morning to yourself or a fun-filled family day with the kids to pick ingredients for supper or lunches. There is always fun to be had and memories to be made.
Building community connections
Buying local food fresh from the farm has always been important, but it has now become a movement. Buying local food benefits our economy and strengthens community connections between urban and rural. Farmers are always looking to learn more about what’s important to you, what you look for in your food, and what your favourite products are. Farmers also love talking about what they do and answering questions about life on the farm. These important conversations make us a more connected region.
Remember, when you buy local food, you are buying directly from a farm family and supporting Durham Region’s local economy.
The Invest Durham Local Food Directory provides a list of local food sources that can be searched by location or type, such as Community Supported Agriculture, on-farm retail, craft beverages and more.
