Be prepared for emergencies this summer

Whitby, Ontario – The Durham Emergency Management Office wants you to be prepared for severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and other potential emergencies this summer.
In 2017, there were 14 severe thunderstorm warnings in Durham. During the past 10 years tornadoes have touched down in Ashburn, Bowmanville, and twice in Orono. New member sworn in for Durham Regional Council

Whitby, Ontario – Today, City of Oshawa Regional Councillor Joe Kolodzie completed his Declaration of Office and became a member of Durham Regional Council.
Councillor Kolodzie fills the vacancy left by the resignation of City of Oshawa Regional Councillor Bob Chapman. Councillor Kolodzie was appointed to this role, by members of Oshawa City Council, during their June 28 meeting.

New designated smoking area at Durham Region Headquarters

Whitby, Ontario – The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department, would like to advise the public that smoking and the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) on Regional Headquarters property is now restricted to a designated smoking area.
When: Effective Tuesday, July 3.
Where: The new dedicated smoking area at the Region of Durham Headquarters (605 Rossland Road East, Whitby), is located on the south side of the building, on the eastern edge of the parking lot.

Whitby, Ontario – The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department would like to advise residents of eastbound lane restrictions on Victoria Street East (Regional Road 22), west of Thickson Road South (Regional Road 26), in Whitby.
When: July 9 to 20.
Where: Victoria Street East, west of Thickson Road South, in the Town of Whitby.
Why: To safely install a watermain in support of new development.

Emergency exercise successfully completed

The Region of Durham has successfully completed an emergency reception centre exercise at the Durham College and UOIT campus in Oshawa.
The Region regularly co-ordinates exercises as part of its ongoing emergency management program. During this exercise, participants simulated opening and operating an emergency reception centre. A reception centre would open in the extremely unlikely event of a nuclear emergency.
