Durham Region’s Waste Management Facilities increasing user fees effective May 1

Whitby, Ontario – Effective May 1, 2024, the minimum user fee for general residential and commercial garbage waste will increase from $5 per load to $7 per load for loads up to 40 kilograms (88 pounds). For every eight kilograms greater than 40 kilograms, the fee will increase from $1 to $1.40. The flat rate for loads weighing 1,000 kilograms (metric tonne) or more will increase from $125 to $175 per 1,000 kilograms. Whitby, Ontario – The Regional Municipality of Durham has teamed up with the area municipalities to offer free compost to residents at special events taking place across the region.

Health Department launches new interactive dashboard to monitor local opioid statistics

Whitby, Ontario - Durham Region Health Department has developed a new interactive dashboard to monitor local opioid-related statistics and issues. This new dashboard, known as the Durham Region Opioid Information System (DROIS), will replace the previous online monitoring resource of the same name and will continue to be located on durham.ca.

Proceed with caution through construction zones

The number of construction projects increases as the weather warms up. To protect the safety of workers, other drivers, pedestrians and cyclists, all drivers are reminded to slow down and proceed with caution through construction zones or areas where workers are present.
Drivers are also reminded that speed limits are reduced in construction zones, and fines are doubled when workers are present.

Recycle your batteries during the week of April 22

Whitby, Ontario – The Regional Municipality of Durham is reminding residents to place their used household batteries out for recycling on their blue box collection day, during the week of April 22.
When: Spring battery collection occurs from April 22 to 26 on blue box collection days.
