Be prepared for emergencies this winter
Whitby, Ontario – Are you prepared for winter snow and ice storms, long periods of cold temperatures, and other possible emergencies this season?
The Region of Durham and your local area municipalities have emergency plans in place. However, your own planning is also important.
“Winter weather can be severe and unpredictable,” said Warren Leonard, Director of Emergency Management. “Now is the time to make sure you have an emergency plan and emergency kits for yourself and your family.”
The Durham Emergency Management Office recommends having a prepare to stay and a prepare to go emergency kit at home. A stay kit has basic supplies to last 72 hours. A go kit will save precious time if you are forced to leave your home. Drivers should also have a vehicle emergency kit in case they become stranded on the road.
Learn how to build an emergency plan and emergency kits in the Region’s Are You Ready? guide. The guide is available online at durham.ca/demo, by emailing demo@durham.ca, by calling 1-800-372-1102 ext. 2792, or by picking it up in person at the Region of Durham Headquarters (605 Rossland Road East in Whitby).
During an emergency, monitor local media and official government websites and social media channels for information and instructions.
