There are some things you need to know before you renovate, dig or build on your property.
Applications, permits and by-laws
There may be by-laws that apply to your renovation. You may also need to fill out certain applications or get a permit.
Land division and development
You may need to find out about your land division and land development to complete your project.
Building and digging
You may be limited in what you can do and need permission to alter your property if:
- Your property uses a private well.
- Your property uses a private drinking system.
- Your property has a septic system.
If you plan on digging on your property, remember to call before you dig. If you have renovation waste, check the Know Before You Throw tool to see the correct places and methods of disposal.
Flooding
When you are renovating, you can do things to prevent flooding.
Taxes and assessment
After your home improvements are finished, there may be some changes to the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation's (MPAC) assessed value for your property which will impact the amount of property taxes you pay. Your property may need to be reassessed to determine the amount of your property taxes.
