Illness, Infection and Disease
Under the Ontario Health Protection and Promotion Act, the Health Department is required to track and control the spread of infectious diseases in Durham Region. This includes more than 50 reportable diseases that have to be reported to the Health Department for follow-up by staff. The Health Department encourages practicing basic hand hygiene, which includes frequent handwashing with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, to help stop the spread of infection and disease.
People are also encouraged to take care of their health by visiting a health care provider regularly. Screening and early detection for diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease, and checks for sexually transmitted infections, can help to reduce the risk of illness and save lives.
Preventing the transmission of diseases such as West Nile virus and tick-borne diseases also starts with everyone. Taking precautions to protect you and your family from mosquito or tick bites can help to prevent harmful infections and a potentially lengthy illness.
