Durham Region has developed its first Community Safety and Well-Being (CSWB) Plan.
Through community engagement sessions and data analysis, the Plan identified the following:
- Priority risk factors in the community:
- Mental Health
- Substance use
- Criminal involvement
- Social isolation
- Victimization
- Homelessness and basic needs
- Experiences of Racism
- Programs and strategies to address these factors
- Data points as trackable performance indicators
The goal of the CSWB Plan is to ensure residents of Durham Region feel safe and have a sense of belonging, and their needs for education, health care, food, housing, income, as well as social and cultural expression are met.
The Health Department has developed a map of community amenities and services within Durham Region (Health Neighbourhoods).
In this interactive map of community amenities and services, 96 indicators are presented by neighbourhood and municipality. The data tells us about the demographics and health of our communities. Strong, safe and equitable neighbourhoods can improve the health and well-being of all residents across Durham Region.

Community engagement highlighted the need to raise awareness of the existing services available to Durham residents. Durham 211 provides access to government, health, community, and social services in Durham Region (such as housing, mental health and food). You can also call for free, confidential, live answer support, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Community engagement highlighted the value of making CSWB Plan indicator data available to the community. The CSWB Plan data dashboard integrates data from many community data sources to provide a thorough, real-time, snapshot of local data that can be utilized to inform other areas of work including the Community Social Investment Fund and areas of economic development. In addition to providing transparent performance indicators, this data can be used for many purposes, including assisting with funding proposals and local project development.
