Beaverton Supportive Housing Project features superior sustainability initiatives
Whitby, Ontario – The Regional Municipality of Durham is energized to lead the way on environmental initiatives with the Beaverton Supportive Housing Project.
This new development will have superior energy performance and a reduced carbon footprint, aligning with the Region’s commitment to protecting the environment through leadership in sustainability and addressing climate change.
The Beaverton Supportive Housing Project is a three-storey residential building with accommodations for up to 50 residents and a community hub building with dining facilities, service delivery space, and a commercial kitchen. It will include the following sustainability initiatives:
- Modular off-site production (a first for the Region) that reduces pollutants, waste, and environmental disturbance caused by traditional construction. When ready, it will be delivered to the site for final assembly.
- High performing, insulated thermally broken roofs, walls and windows will reduce the heating and cooling load for the buildings. Suites will use an energy efficient heating and cooling system.
- Durable and long-life products used in construction, and steel with a high recycled content, will lower the carbon footprint of this project.
- Building systems that operate on electrical supply only to reduce CO2 emissions. This is the first Regional development that will operate without fossil fuels.
- The project team is currently reviewing the installation of solar panels on this building to offset electrical demand. This project aims to beat the standard energy performance referenced in the National Energy Code of Canada by a potential of 15 per cent.
The Region of Durham continues to review sustainability initiatives for the Beaverton Supportive Housing Project, as part of its ongoing commitment to protect the environment.
