Celebrating National Tree Day in Durham Region
National Tree Day is quickly approaching. On September 25, 2024, Durham Region celebrates the benefits that trees bring to our communities and quality of life. It’s a great opportunity to reflect on the importance of trees and to highlight the efforts of local tree planting programs, Durham TREES and LEAF, both of which are making a tangible impact on our environment and quality of life.
Trees are vital to our ecosystem. They provide shade, improve air quality, reduce stormwater run-off, and create habitats for wildlife. Trees enhance the beauty of our neighbourhoods and contribute to our overall well-being. On National Tree Day, we encourage everyone to get involved in tree planting and care.
Durham TREES: Planting for the Future
Durham TREES is a collaborative initiative between Durham Region and its five local conservation authorities. The program focuses on planting hardy conifers and some hardwood species to create resilient forests that are sure to thrive for generations. Durham TREES program is open to private landowners with at least two acres of land. By participating, landowners can help establish new forests, enhance existing woodlots, and create windbreaks and riparian buffers. Planting trees supports environmental sustainability while contributing to fighting climate change by sequestering carbon and improving biodiversity. Visit the Durham TREES website to find out more.
LEAF: Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests
LEAF is another residential program that supports tree planting in Durham Region. LEAF offers subsidized Backyard Tree Planting, providing native trees and shrubs to urban property owners at a reduced cost. This program includes consultation with a certified arborist, ensuring that the right tree is planted in the right place for optimal growth and health. Visit the LEAF website to learn how you can participate.
