Chair Henry proclaims June as Seniors’ Month in Durham Region
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“On behalf of Regional Council, I have officially proclaimed June as Seniors’ Month in the Region of Durham.
Approximately one quarter of Durham’s residents are age 55 and older. In honour of Seniors’ Month, I would like to recognize the valuable impact that older residents make within our communities. Thank you for sharing your words of wisdom, for helping to grow our economy, for volunteering to help others, and for all that you do to make a positive difference in Durham Region.
The theme for Seniors’ Month this year is “Stay safe, active and connected.” The Regional Municipality of Durham remains committed to creating accessible and inclusive communities, where all residents enjoy a high quality of life, and feel included and respected. As part of this commitment, the Region joined the World Health Organization’s Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities to help ensure Durham is healthy, safe and happy for everyone.
While this past year has been especially challenging for seniors, now that the vaccine rollout is well underway, I am hopeful for the future. Together with our community partners, we’re focusing on programs and services that enable seniors to live life to the fullest during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.
Thank you to all of Durham Region’s older adults for your perseverance and for remaining #DurhamStrong.”
