Chair Henry reminds residents of proper non-medical masks and face coverings practices

Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:

“Since July, we’ve been following the advice of Dr. Robert Kyle, Durham Region’s Medical Officer of Health, to ensure the mandatory use of non-medical masks or face coverings within most public and enclosed indoor spaces.

Non-medical masks or face coverings are mandatory for all community members, with the exception of those who have specific health or age restrictions.  

With the second wave upon us, it’s important that residents be reminded of the proper techniques for choosing and wearing a mask, to ensure that they are protecting themselves, their families and their neighbours from the spread of COVID-19.

• When choosing your mask, pick one that is comfortable, breathable, and completely covers the nose, mouth and chin without any gaping holes.
• Wash your hands before putting the mask on or taking it off.
• Make sure your mask covers your nose, mouth and chin at all times while wearing your mask.
• Avoid moving, adjusting or touching the mask.
• Change your mask by only touching the straps or ear loops. Do not touch the front of the mask.
• Don’t wear your mask on your chin, arm, or dangling from your ear in between uses.

There is significant public health evidence that suggests widespread use of non-medical masks or face coverings—when used with other public health recommendations—are effective in the fight against COVID-19. This includes physical distancing in public spaces, frequently washing your hands, and staying home when you are sick.

We will continue to enforce this policy in ‘good faith’; using it as an opportunity to educate people on the use of face coverings, combined with other recommended public health practices, to help keep our community—and each other—safe.

We have done tremendous work so far to stop the spread. Let’s keep up the good work. Take care and stay safe.”
