Chair Henry welcomes $15 billion federal investment in public transit

Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer:

“Earlier today, the Government of Canada announced a significant investment of $15 billion in public transit over the span of eight years beginning in 2026. This is a major increase in permanent federal transit funding.

This is also great news for Durham Region—both Durham Region Transit and our transit-oriented development initiatives. I look forward to learning more about the allocation levels of this funding soon; helping to drive the positive impact this funding will have on the Region’s vision of an integrated transit network.

I am pleased to see that the federal government has demonstrated its commitment to the future of public transit—here in Durham Region and across Canada.

We look forward to more details on funding for Durham Region in the near future, and we are eager to continue our partnership with all levels of government on keeping Durham Region Transit one of the best public transit services in the country.”
