COVID-19 Moderna Spikevax Bivalent booster bookings open September 12

Whitby, Ontario - Durham Region Health Department will begin offering Moderna Spikevax Bivalent COVID-19 vaccine booster doses to eligible individuals, as announced by the Ontario Ministry of Health.

Vulnerable populations including residents of long-term care homes and congregate settings, adults 70 and older, healthcare workers, First Nations, Inuit and Métis individuals 18 and older, immunocompromised individuals 12 and older, and pregnant individuals, will be eligible to receive the bivalent vaccine as of September 12. Residents can receive bivalent vaccine at pharmacies, select health care providers, pop-up clinics, and community immunization clinics. To prioritize distribution to vulnerable groups, new booster appointments for the general population 18 and older will be paused until September 26. However, all individuals 18 and older who do not belong to a priority population are able to start booking appointments as of today. All previously booked booster appointments for September 12 to 25 will be honoured and, if available, the bivalent vaccine will be offered.

Eligible individuals can receive a booster dose of the Moderna Spikevax Bivalent COVID-19 vaccine at a recommended interval of 168 days (six months) following a previous COVID-19 vaccine dose or previous COVID-19 infection, but residents may receive the vaccine at 84 days (three months).
