Drive safely and slow down in construction zones
Whitby, Ontario – The Regional Municipality of Durham is reminding drivers to slow down and proceed with caution through construction zones or areas where workers are present.
All construction zones or areas marked for roadside work in Durham Region are blocked off by pylons, measured to meet provincial standards. Speed limits are reduced in construction zones, and fines are doubled when workers are present. Never make a U-turn to avoid construction; and be sure to pay attention to signage, reduce your speed and increase your following distance. Drivers are asked to exercise caution for the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and work crews.

This initiative is in support of Durham Vision Zero, a long-term, multi-agency strategy to create safer roads for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. Learn more at durham.ca/VisionZero.
Please be advised, in response to COVID-19, the Province of Ontario has identified the maintenance and repair of critical infrastructure including roads as an essential service, according to the latest update of essential workplaces.

“Construction and maintenance is essential to everyday life in Durham Region. In order to protect the safety of our essential workers—as well as drivers, cyclists and pedestrians—we’re asking residents to please drive carefully through areas of construction. Lane restrictions and road closures are required to complete work safely and efficiently, however, we understand that traffic delays can be frustrating. Thank you for your patience and co-operation.”
