Drop off electronic waste, hazardous waste and reusable items in Clarington September 22

Whitby, Ontario – The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department, in partnership with the Municipality of Clarington, invites residents to drop off electronic waste, household hazardous waste, and reusable items—free of charge—at a special collection event.

When: Saturday, September 22, from 8 a.m. to noon (rain or shine)

Where: Clarington Operations Depot, 178 Darlington-Clarke Townline Road, Bowmanville (south of Highway 2)

Why:

Electronic waste collection: To provide residents with a convenient, free drop-off service to recycle their electronics. By participating, residents are helping to recover and recycle valuable resources, while keeping toxic materials out of the waste stream. Examples of electronic waste include: cellphones, audio and video players, VCRs, DVD and Blu-Ray players, stereos and receivers, computer peripherals, printing devices, televisions, personal digital assistants and pagers, cameras and radios, telephones, desktop computers, monitors, camcorders and portable computers. Residents should erase personal information from hard drives and SIM cards before bringing their obsolete, broken and end of life electronics for safe and secure recycling.

Household hazardous waste collection: By safely disposing of household hazardous waste, residents help prevent toxic materials from entering local ecosystems and local water sources. Examples of household hazardous waste include: acids (rust stain removers, drain cleaners etc.); alkalines (cleaners, degreasers and ammonia etc.); antifreeze; batteries; brake fluid; motor oil and filters; fluorescent light bulbs and tubes; pesticides; herbicides; fertilizers; insecticides; cooking oil; medications; syringes (contained in a sealed puncture-proof container); mercury thermostats; pressurized tanks (propane, oxygen, helium or other gases); pool chemicals; paints; stains and solvents. Commercial, institutional, agricultural or industrial waste is not permitted.

Reuse Days: A program to help divert quality, reusable items from the waste stream, including: clothing, textensioniles, furniture, appliances, cabinets, countertops and most other reusable renovation materials. At Reuse Days, partnering charities—Habitat for Humanity ReStores (Ajax, Oshawa and Uxbridge locations), Diabetes Canada and the Salvation Army Thrift Store—work with the Region to accept reusable items. Only items deemed to be suitable for reuse by charities will be accepted. Garbage will not be accepted. Materials refused by charities must be removed by residents and may be disposed of at one of the Region’s waste management facilities (fees may apply).

Note: Residents are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item, to be donated to a local food bank (please check for damaged packaging and expiration dates).
