Durham Region begins eliminating single use plastics at Regional Headquarters
Whitby, Ontario – The Regional Municipality of Durham is taking steps to eliminate single use plastics at Regional Headquarters (HQ).
Bottled water (with the exception of carbonated water) will no longer be sold at Regional Headquarters. Visitors to HQ are encouraged to bring their own refillable water bottles that can be filled at one of two filling stations located on the first floor of Regional HQ – one of which is conveniently located in the cafeteria.
Take out containers from the deli area and hot table in the cafeteria are also fully compostable, and plastic straws have been replaced with compostable paper straws.
“These initiatives are a great first step to eliminate single use plastics and reduce our environmental impact at Regional Headquarters,” said Jenni Demanuele, Director of Business Services, Works Department. “Residents can reduce single use plastics in their own home as well, by using a refillable water bottle and reusable food containers instead of single use plastic bags and plastic water bottles that quickly end up in the waste stream.”
More changes are coming soon, as the Region continues to pursue its goal of eliminating single use plastics at Regional Headquarters.
