Durham Region calls for provincial partnership; strengthening opportunities for our rural communities
Whitby, Ontario – During the Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) annual conference—held January 19 to 21—representatives from The Regional Municipality of Durham met with provincial cabinet ministers to discuss opportunities specific to our region’s rural communities.
These discussions—designed to help strengthen partnerships and offer solutions for a stronger and more resilient region—focused on provincial support and action related to two main issues:
- Broadband: A vital piece of modern infrastructure, broadband is essential to Durham Region’s strong digital future. During a meeting with the Minister of Infrastructure, we discussed the need for broadband investment for both our rural residents and those living in underserved urban areas. - Transit: A meeting with the Minister of Transportation provided a chance for our team to discuss funding opportunities through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program; expanding Durham Region Transit (DRT) in rural Durham; and reconfirming the need for the GO Lakeshore East Extension to be north of Highway 401.
“To ensure Durham Region is the economic engine of the future, we need to secure a strong and robust community,” said John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer. “Investments in broadband and transit will pave the way for our digital future and create economic opportunities specific to our more rural communities.”
Each year, the Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) conference brings rural leaders together to focus on the challenges and opportunities facing rural communities.
