Durham Region celebrates 50 years!
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“On behalf of the Region of Durham and its residents, I’m excited to share that Durham Region is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year!
On January 1, 1974 (under The Regional Municipality of Durham Act, 1973), Durham Region became the largest jurisdiction in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, measuring just over 2,500 square kilometres.
While a lot has changed over the past five decades, some things remain the same. We are committed to maintaining strong, responsive and sustainable services that best serve the needs of our residents. We want to continue to be known as a place that provides a great quality of life, where people can live, work, play and grow within their communities.
To mark this memorable occasion, a special commemorative 50th flag was raised at Regional Headquarters. To further celebrate throughout the year, we’re inviting residents to share their favourite part about living in Durham. Why are you proud to call Durham home? What milestones have you achieved while living here? What’s your favourite thing to do in your local municipality?
Please join us as we celebrate 50 years of growth, service excellence, collaboration and innovation. To learn more about the history of Durham Region, or to share your favourite thing about living here, visit durham.ca/50Years.
The future looks bright for Durham Region.”
