Durham Region celebrates Asian Heritage Month
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“Today marks the beginning of Asian Heritage Month—a time to recognize and reflect on the significant contributions that Asian communities have made, and continue to make, to Canadian history, heritage and identity.
Throughout this month, we will celebrate the positive impact and achievements of Asian Canadians to the region; and we will also take this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to fostering safe and welcoming communities for all.
Asian Heritage Month reminds us to reflect on the rich cultural roots and deep contributions made by Asians in Canadian history. It also provides an opportunity to reflect on systemic challenges and barriers that Asian communities continue to face. As a Region, we are committed to raising awareness about and actively challenging all forms of racism, including anti-Asian racism.
This month and beyond, I encourage you to celebrate the history and positive contributions of Asian Canadians in our region, across Canada and around the world.
