Durham Region celebrates Pride Month
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“In Durham Region, we strive to create safe, respectful and inclusive communities where everyone is welcomed, feels heard and is valued for who they are.
Today, we are proud to celebrate the beginning of Pride Month—a time to recognize the resiliency, talent and contributions of Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (2SLGBTQI+) people; and their journey toward equality.
It is important that Durham Region is a place where diversity is embraced; having a sense of belonging is critical to our personal and collective success. We acknowledge the diverse and intersectional identities within 2SLGBTQI+ communities, and will continue to champion equity and acceptance of everyone.
In honour and support of 2SLGBTQI+ communities, this morning, we will proudly raise the Intersex-Inclusive Progressive Pride Flag at Regional Headquarters.
We will continue Pride Month celebrations on June 17 at the Youth Pride Durham event, taking place at Regional Headquarters (605 Rossland Road East, Whitby). I encourage residents to join us from 1 to 3 p.m., for this safe, inclusive celebration for 2SLGBTQI+ community members, families, chosen families, friends and supporters.
