Durham Region celebrates Waste Reduction Week

Whitby, Ontario  – The Regional Municipality of Durham has recognized Waste Reduction Week from October 16 to 22, with an official proclamation on behalf of Regional Council.

“While Durham Region manages waste through our curbside collection program and waste management facilities, the best way to reduce waste is for residents to limit the amount they generate to begin with. That’s why we’re joining municipalities across Canada in celebrating Waste Reduction Week, a campaign that educates, engages and empowers Canadians to reduce waste,” said Susan Siopis, Commissioner of Works for The Regional Municipality of Durham. “Residents can reduce waste every day through simple changes such as choosing a reusable coffee mug, buying products in bulk to reduce packaging, and bringing reusable bags when you go shopping.”

In celebration of Waste Reduction Week, residents are invited to view a series of educational displays that are set up at Durham Regional Headquarters from October 16 to 20. There will also be a used clothing collection bin in the main lobby of Durham Regional Headquarters; clothes will be donated to Diabetes Canada's reusable goods donation program.

On October 21, residents can drop off reusable items free of charge at the Durham Region Waste Management Centre in Whitby for Reuse Day. Also on October 21, there is an electronic waste and hazardous waste collection event taking place in Scugog. For more information, visit durham.ca/wasteevents.
