Durham Region earns OPWA Project of the Year Award for new Clarington Police Complex
Whitby, Ontario – The new Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) Clarington Police Complex has been named Project of the Year for 2016 by the Ontario Public Works Association (OPWA) in the Structures, $10 to $50 million category.
Works Department staff (Business Services—Facilities Design, Construction and Asset Management Division) were presented with the OPWA Project of the Year Award today at Durham Regional Council. This award promotes excellence in the management and administration of public works projects by recognizing an alliance among the managing agency, the consultant/engineer and the contractor.
“Durham Region Police Service’s new home in Clarington provides a highly functional, purpose-built facility to serve the needs of a growing community,” says Jenni Demanuele, Director of Business Services. “We worked closely with DRPS, the local community, consultants and contractors to complete this project. The new complex is a wonderful example of how the power of collaboration can lead to fantastic results.”
The new Clarington Police Complex is a 27-acre greenfield site and includes a new East Division Building, as well as a Forensic Investigation Facility that provides evidence processing and investigative services for the entire region.
Special considerations in the development of the site were taken since the Darlington Creek runs through the centre of the property. This important watershed was naturalized and protected in the development of the site—just one of many sustainable measures taken in the project. The complex as a whole is targeting LEED Silver certification.
Durham Region’s Works Department oversees the design and construction of major capital projects for all Regional facilities, including police, transit, paramedic services, long-term care homes, works depots, Durham Region Local Housing, Regional Headquarters and satellite offices.
