Durham Region honours Canada’s brave heroes this November
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“November is a time of remembrance. It is an opportunity to honour and show respect for our country’s Veterans, and those who have chosen to serve as regular and reserve service members. So many brave individuals have defended the freedoms and values we enjoy today, while others stand ready to serve.
Today (November 8), is National Indigenous Veterans Day—a time to recognize Indigenous Veterans who have served in the Canadian Armed Forces; to honour the important contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Veterans in their service to Canada; and to remember those whose lives were lost or forever changed.
On Remembrance Day (November 11), residents across the country will pause for a moment of silence in honour of Canada’s Veterans, and regular and reserve force members, who have served, and continue to serve, in times of war, conflict and peace.
As Canadians, we have a responsibility to uphold the peace that our country’s Veterans and active-duty members have fought for; a duty to preserve their memory and ensure their sacrifice is not forgotten.
I encourage you to offer a moment of silence on November 11 at 11 a.m., to reflect on the service and sacrifice of our country’s Veterans. Flags at Regional Headquarters will be lowered to half-mast today (November 8) and Saturday (November 11).
Lest we forget.”
