Durham Region honours National Indigenous History Month
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“Today marks the beginning of National Indigenous History Month—a time to reflect on and honour the achievements and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples.
We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to operate on the traditional and treaty territories of the Nations covered under the Williams Treaties, including the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation; Alderville First Nation; Hiawatha First Nation; Curve Lake First Nation; and the Chippewa Nations of Georgina Island, Beausoleil and Rama.
We honour, recognize and respect these Nations and Indigenous Peoples as the traditional stewards of the lands and waters on which we have the privilege to operate.
Durham Region is committed to advancing truth and reconciliation and is actively working toward building and renewing relationships to address past inequities; to continue our learning journey and create spaces for healing.
To honour National Indigenous History Month, the Medicine Wheel flag will be raised this morning (June 1) at Durham Regional Headquarters.
This month and beyond, I encourage residents to seek out knowledge about the rich and diverse histories, heritage and culture of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples.
