Durham Region hosts annual farm tour to showcase local agriculture
Whitby, Ontario –
Yesterday, the Durham Agricultural Advisory Committee (DAAC) successfully hosted its 15th annual farm tour at Ajax Downs. The theme was “Off to the Races in Durham Region,” and covered a variety of topics including: the economic impact of the equestrian industry; race track management; animal nutrition; and a tour of the race barns.
“This year’s tour was unique because it focused on the equestrian industry, with a spotlight on Quarter Horse racing. It was very interesting to gain an understanding of the role this sector plays in the broader agricultural landscape.” said Brian Bridgeman, Commissioner of Planning and Economic Development.
Almost 100 participants attended the event, including elected officials, representatives from various levels of government, the educational sector and public agencies.
“This year’s tour focused on educating participants about the economic impacts of the equestrian industry in Durham,” said Zac Cohoon, Chair of DAAC. “We received a number of presentations from a variety of subject matter experts. We truly appreciate the support we get from the agricultural community in hosting this annual event.”
DAAC is a volunteer advisory committee that provides advice to the Region on agricultural and rural-related matters. Since the inaugural tour in 2003, DAAC has showcased more than 40 farms, to more than 1,100 participants.
