Durham Region hosts annual farm tour to showcase local agriculture
Whitby, Ontario – Yesterday, the Durham Agricultural Advisory Committee (DAAC) successfully hosted its 16th annual farm tour at Reesor Elevators in Port Perry. The theme was “Harvesting the sun in Durham Region,” and covered a variety of topics including: crop production; different types of crops produced locally; farm equipment; handling, storage and processing; marketing; and end use consumer products.
“Agriculture is one of the largest industries in Durham Region,” said Brian Bridgeman, Commissioner of Planning and Economic Development. “It is important we provide this unique opportunity to showcase agriculture directly from individuals who are involved in the industry.”
Almost 100 participants attended this year’s event, including elected officials, representatives from various levels of government, the educational sector, public agencies and local agricultural implement dealers.
“This year’s tour focused on educating participants about the crop industry and the work that goes into growing crops, from primary production to end products,” said Zac Cohoon, Chair of DAAC. “We received a number of presentations from a variety of subject matter experts. We truly appreciate the support we get from the agricultural community in hosting this annual event.”
DAAC is a volunteer advisory committee that provides advice to the Region on agricultural and rural-related matters. Since the inaugural tour in 2003, DAAC has showcased more than 40 farms and other agricultural facilities, to more than 1,100 participants.
