Durham Region hosts annual farm tour to showcase local agriculture
Whitby, Ontario – Yesterday, the Durham Agricultural Advisory Committee (DAAC) successfully hosted its 17th annual farm tour at Willowtree Farm in Port Perry. The theme was “Farm to table in Durham Region,” and covered a variety of topics including: livestock, crops, on-farm processing and farm-related retail. The tour started with a keynote speech from Charles Stevens, owner of Wilmot Orchards and Board Member of the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association.
“Agriculture is a key economic sector in Durham Region,” said Brian Bridgeman, Commissioner of Planning and Economic Development. “The DAAC farm tour provides a unique opportunity for participants to learn about Durham’s vibrant agricultural sector directly from individuals in the industry.”
More than 100 participants attended this year’s event, including elected officials, representatives from various levels of government, the educational sector and public agencies.
“The purpose of this year’s tour is to showcase how diverse a farm-based agricultural operation can be, and to provide participants with a better understanding of agriculture, and the opportunities and challenges in Durham Region. Willowtree Farm is a shining example of a successful, innovative and diversified family-owned and operated local agricultural operation,” said Zac Cohoon, Chair of DAAC. “We truly appreciate the support we receive each year from the agricultural community in hosting this event and from the attendees that take the time to come out and learn about Durham’s agricultural industry.”
DAAC is a volunteer advisory committee that provides advice to the Region on agricultural and rural-related matters. Since the inaugural tour in 2003, DAAC has showcased more than 40 farms and other agricultural facilities, to more than 1,200 participants.
