Durham Region identifies priorities for federal investment
Whitby, Ontario – The Regional Municipality of Durham has identified eight priority areas for partnership with the federal government to help ensure continued growth and prosperity in one of Canada’s fastest growing regions.
“Allocation-based funding will help to drive Durham’s economic growth and development, advance quality of life and support the future of transportation,” said John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer. “The results: a resilient community that is vibrant, prosperous and connected.”
As outlined in Durham’s Priorities for Federal Investment 2019, key initiatives include:
- Approving the Toronto East (Pickering) airport as Canada’s next economic engine.
- Promoting the route north of the 401 for the Metrolinx Lakeshore GO East extension to Bowmanville.
- Creating an integrated regional rapid transit network.
- Supporting Regional action on climate change and measures to address extreme weather.
- Ensuring region-wide access to high speed internet.
- Supporting infrastructure rehabilitation and expansion.
- Accelerating Regional efforts to recover resources from waste streams.
- Increasing access to vital social services such as child care and affordable housing.
“With the federal government as a partner, the Region will be able to capitalize on several key projects to promote growth and sustainability in Durham,” continued Henry. “It’s about building critical infrastructure and supporting safe and reliable systems and services. Investing in our communities today will help ensure strength and prosperity tomorrow.”
