Durham Region recognizes Lunar New Year
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“This year, Lunar New Year, also known as Spring Festival, begins on January 22 and culminates with the Lantern Festival. Lunar New Year is celebrated by many Chinese and Asian communities all over the world, and right here in Durham Region.
2023 is the Year of the Rabbit and is a symbol of longevity, peace and prosperity in Chinese culture. This year is predicted as being a year of hope. With hope, we can look ahead to emerge stronger as a Region while continuing to recover from recent uncertain times.
Traditions during Lunar New Year include spending time with loved ones, eating traditional foods, wearing festive red clothing and watching fireworks. Families and friends share red envelopes containing money which are accompanied by well-wishes for a year of good fortune.
This is a great opportunity for us to celebrate the significant contributions made by Asian communities to Durham Region and I extend my warmest wishes to all those celebrating Lunar New Year. May this Year of the Rabbit bring you longevity, peace and prosperity.”
