Durham Region recognizes National Indigenous History Month

Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:

“June is National Indigenous History Month. It encourages us to take time to learn and honour the history, ancestral traditions, and diversity of First Nation, Inuit and Métis people. We encourage everyone to reflect on the relationships—both past and present— between settler and Indigenous communities. To move forward with the ongoing work of reconciliation in our hearts, minds and actions.

We are eternally grateful for the opportunity to operate on the traditional and treaty territory of the Williams Treaties First Nations and acknowledge the Mississaugas and Chippewas Nations for their guardianship of the land on which Durham Region operates.

I invite everyone to take time to be open and honest about our historic and contemporary relationship with the First Peoples of this land. Because it is through these actions that we can truly embrace Indigeneity and diverse identities; creating a safe and welcoming place for everyone to call home.

Durham Region is committed to reconciliation not just in June, but every day.”
