Durham Region reminds residents of the 2022 municipal election and Regional Chair position
Whitby, Ontario – The Regional Municipality of Durham would like to remind residents of the upcoming municipal election taking place on Monday, October 24. All eligible electors in Durham Region will have the opportunity to elect a Regional Chair, via general vote.
Why: In the 2022 municipal election, eligible electors may vote for a Regional Chair, in addition to offices of mayor, local and regional councillors, and school board trustees.
When: This year’s municipal elections will take place on October 24. The nomination period for the position of the Regional Chair runs from May 2 to August 19, at 2 p.m. The campaign period begins when a candidate files complete nomination material with the Regional Clerk.
Where: Even though this is a Regional position, the area municipalities will conduct the election within their specific city/town and report voting results to the Regional Clerk. The Regional Clerk will then prepare a summary of the vote and announce the successful candidate.
Quick Facts:
- The Regional Chair provides representation to the approximately 713,680 residents of Durham Region.
- The Regional Chair is the head of Durham Regional Council, and Chief Executive Officer of the municipality.
- Duties of the Regional Chair include presiding over all meetings of Regional Council; promoting and advancing the Region’s position on matters; representing Durham on various boards, committees, and organizations; and performing other significant duties.
- There are specific guidelines that must be followed to register as a candidate. These are outlined in the candidate’s guide provided by the Region of Durham.
- The Region of Durham must be fair to all candidates; and will not be seen as favouring one individual over another.
- All candidates for the Regional Chair position must be an eligible elector in Durham Region.
