Durham Region road projects affected by contractor's labour disruption

Whitby, Ontario – The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department would like to advise the public that due to the labour disruption with LiUNA Local 183, several Regional road construction projects will stop work immediately. This union represents contract workers in the paving industry employed by Coco Paving and other companies. There are currently three Regional road construction projects that involve Coco Paving. This labour disruption does not involve Durham Region employees.

“Work will stop at all affected Regional road construction projects until the labour disruption ends,” says Susan Siopis, Commissioner of Works. “The Region is committed to providing safe and efficient road transportation. Regional staff will monitor the affected Regional road construction project sites daily for the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.”

There will be a delay in the construction schedules and timelines for the projects affected. The Region realizes that these delays may be disruptive, and sincerely appreciates the public’s understanding in this regard. The following Coco Paving projects will be affected by the labour disruption:

Mara Road Reconstruction in Beaverton (D2016-48), in Brock Township.
Brock Road and Highway 2 BRT (D2015-19), in the City of Pickering.
Regional Road 57 from Regional Road 3 to Regional Road 20 (D2016-8), in The Municipality of Clarington.

A list of affected road projects and up-to-date information about this situation can also be found on the Region’s website at www.durham.ca. More road projects will likely be affected and the list will be updated as required. Information is also available via the Region’s social media channels.

The Works Department maintains and upgrades the Regional road system, including preventative maintenance, winter maintenance, repairs and new construction, to provide safe and efficient road transportation.
