Durham Region’s annual DAAC farm tour highlights future innovations and challenges in agriculture
Whitby, Ontario – Yesterday, the Durham Agricultural Advisory Committee (DAAC) successfully hosted its 22nd annual farm tour at Scugog Community Recreation Centre in Port Perry. The theme was “Forward Thinking Agriculture in Durham Region” and covered a variety of topics, including experimental farming, modern challenges in agriculture, opportunities and challenges of on-farm diversified uses, family farms and diversifying farm operations.
“Events like this are important for people to connect with the agriculture sector and share solutions,” said Brian Bridgeman, Commissioner of Planning and Economic Development.
Almost 140 participants joined agriculture leaders at this year’s event, including representatives from various levels of government, students, post-secondary partners, public agencies and local farm equipment dealers.
“With topics ranging from experimental farming to the challenges and opportunities facing family farms, speakers at the event shared their insight into how we can continue to innovate and grow within the agricultural sector,” said Zac Cohoon, Chair of DAAC. “The agricultural transportation exhibit was another highlight, showing how important efficient transport is to the success of farming operations.”
DAAC is a volunteer advisory committee that provides advice to the Region on agricultural and rural-related matters. Since the inaugural tour in 2003, DAAC has showcased more than 40 farms and other agricultural facilities, to more than 1,200 participants.
