Durham Region statement on General Motors announcement

Whitby, Ontario – Today’s announcement by General Motors is deeply disappointing. We recognize that this is an especially difficult time for all employees and families who are directly and indirectly impacted by this news. Durham Region will focus on how to best support those who have been impacted.

The Region expects General Motors to do what is right for their employees and the City of Oshawa. This will have impacts for the Canadian economy as a whole. We will work together with the Federal and Provincial governments to support Canadians facing the loss of high quality, well-paying jobs.

The automotive industry has been investing in the technology to power electric and autonomous vehicles. With the focus on innovation, we have seen the ability of Durham’s workforce to shift and adapt to ensure the resilience of our economy. Durham Region is an ideal location to help drive the transition to a clean, electrified economy.

Durham workers and their families are the Region’s top priority. We look forward to building on our strong partnerships with all other levels of government, as well as post-secondary institutions, to support residents during this difficult transition.
