Durham Region works together to complete the 31-day Active Switch challenge
Whitby, Ontario – The Regional Municipality of Durham thanks all who participated in the Active Switch challenge throughout the month of July. The 31-day competition encouraged residents to travel by foot or bike, promoting active and healthy travel options in Durham Region.
“The Active Switch program promotes physical activity as a critical component to staying healthy,” said Brian Bridgeman, Commissioner of Planning and Economic Development. “By participating in this challenge, residents not only contributed to their own personal goal, but worked together as a community.”
A total of 334 registered users across the region logged 886 active trips. This activity helped eliminate 19,978 kilometres of vehicle travel; and kept 2,135 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions from entering the atmosphere.
“Durham Region is home to a network of trails, bike lanes and shared-use lanes,” said Prasenjit Roy, Manager of Transportation Planning. “Whether it’s walking, running, cycling or skateboarding, there are many commuting options and effective ways to get exercise.”
Active Switch, a partnership between The Regional Municipality of Durham and SustainMobility, is a health and wellness program that creates opportunities for active transportation and promotes healthy and active living in your daily routine. To learn more, visit activeswitch.ca.
