Emergency exercise successfully completed
The Region of Durham has successfully completed an emergency reception centre exercise at the Durham College and UOIT campus in Oshawa.
The Region regularly co-ordinates exercises as part of its ongoing emergency management program. During this exercise, participants simulated opening and operating an emergency reception centre. A reception centre would open in the extremely unlikely event of a nuclear emergency.
“Exercises let us practise and test our emergency response plans and overall preparedness,” said Warren Leonard, Director of Emergency Management. “This exercise reinforced the practices that are in place to protect the safety of Durham residents.”
Approximately 300 people took part in the exercise from 11 partner organizations, including Ontario Power Generation, Durham College, UOIT, City of Oshawa, Canadian Red Cross, Salvation Army, St. John Ambulance, Durham Regional Police, Victim Services of Durham Region, and the Ontario Volunteer Emergency Response Team (OVERT).
