Improving road safety along Simcoe Street in north Oshawa
Durham Region has implemented a new Community Safety Zone around the intersection of Simcoe Street and Conlin Road in Oshawa.
The Community Safety Zone limits are on Simcoe Street between Niagara Drive/Selleck Lane and the access to the Campus Ice Centre (which is just north of Conlin Road), in the vicinity of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (Ontario Tech University) and Durham College. The purpose of a Community Safety Zone, as designated by municipal bylaw in accordance with Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, is to identify roadways where public safety is of special concern. In Community Safety Zones, fines for traffic offences, such as speeding or traffic signal infractions, are doubled.
With a goal to create safe roadways for all users, Durham Region has also requested increased police enforcement in this area. There are also plans to install a radar speed board on Simcoe Street, southbound approaching Conlin Road.
