Know the facts when it comes to Mixed Waste Pre-sort and Anaerobic Digestion - June 2021
Misconception: The Mixed Waste Pre-sort and Anaerobic Digestion (AD) Facility will result in an increase in the amount of garbage processed at the Durham York Energy Centre (DYEC).
Fact: Waste for the new Mixed Waste Pre-sort and Anaerobic Digestion (AD) Facility will only come from Durham Region. Durham’s garbage will be delivered to the new Mixed Waste Pre-sort and Anaerobic Digestion Facility first, so organics, non-combustibles and recyclable items can be removed from each garbage bag. What’s left will go to the DYEC, our energy-from-waste facility. By sending Durham’s garbage to the new Mixed Waste Pre-sort and AD Facility first, to remove items, we will send less garbage to the DYEC and potentially delay the need to expand the DYEC beyond 2035.
