Main Street, Orono construction finishes this fall
The Works Department is pleased to announce that the construction on Main Street (Regional Road 17) in the Municipality of Clarington (Orono Village), which began in the summer of 2017, is scheduled to be complete this fall.
Main Street plays a vital role for the local community in Orono. The construction occurred along a 1.4 kilometre stretch of Main Street to remove ditches; extend the watermain up to Taunton Road for residents on wells; construct a new storm sewer and provide a wider platform for vehicles and cyclists.
The Works Department worked closely with the Municipality of Clarington and partnered with them to include new sidewalks and street lighting. The Works Department also consulted with the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks to construct a new oil/grit separator which controls the quality of the stormwater before discharging into the creek.
There were several hurdles to overcome throughout this project, including an unusual number of rain days and buried utilities that were discovered during construction. The Works Department appreciates the patience and feedback from both residents as well as business owners throughout the course of this project. Stop by Main Street and check out the new infrastructure while visiting local businesses. Learn more about Regional construction projects at durham.ca/WorksProjects.
