Moving forward—support on the GO Lakeshore East Extension from Regional Chair John Henry
Whitby, Ontario – Right now, the number of COVID cases in our community remains high but we know we will emerge from this pandemic and we are planning for recovery. The Durham Region of the past isn’t the Durham Region of the future. We are one of the fastest growing municipalities in Canada, and we are positioning the Region for continued success.
The Region is a community of talented, smart and ambitious people who enjoy a great quality of life. A place where entrepreneurs, innovators, investors, researchers and students come together to exchange ideas, help each other succeed, and be part of a thriving innovation ecosystem.
And to support our continued growth and prosperity, we know we need a strong, integrated transit network. As we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, we will focus on what matters most—creating jobs, stimulating the economy, connecting people to work and education opportunities and building complete, liveable, walkable communities.
That’s why approval of the GO Lakeshore East Extension to Bowmanville is so critical to Durham’s recovery, from the pandemic. With stops at Thornton’s Corners, downtown Oshawa, Courtice and Bowmanville, the new GO stations will be a catalyst for growth and economic development.
There are many reasons why this extension is important. This frequent, reliable accessible transit option will help residents optimize their time—spending less time travelling and more time with family and friends.
We are ready to move forward now to ensure Durham’s vision for the future is realized; and that the benefits of growth and vitality continue to strengthen our community bonds.
We know that the GO Lakeshore East Extension is a priority for the province. We look forward to formal approval in the provincial spring budget. We are hopeful and confident that our partnerships will result in a positive outcome to put Durham on the right track to recovery.
We’re ready to move forward, together. Learn more at durham.ca.
