New video highlights pedestrian crossover improvements at intersections across Durham Region
Whitby, Ontario – As part of our commitment to Durham Vision Zero and in accordance with provincial legislation, The Regional Municipality of Durham is making it safer and easier for pedestrians to cross the street with pedestrian crossovers. Our new video explains the roles and responsibilities of drivers, pedestrians and cyclists using crossovers.
Pedestrian crossovers are currently in operation across Durham Region at select locations where there are no traffic signals, and at selected right-turn channels. Drivers and cyclists should look for the “Stop for pedestrians” sign and must come to a full stop if pedestrians are waiting to cross or lights are flashing. Drivers and cyclists must remain stopped until pedestrians have completely cleared the crosswalk. Drivers who do not stop for pedestrians can be fined up to $1,000 and four demerit points.
Watch our video on the Region’s YouTube channel to learn how to safely navigate a pedestrian crossover.
This initiative is in support of Durham Vision Zero, a long-term, multi-agency strategy to create safer roads for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. Learn more at durham.ca/VisionZero.
