Our Durham farm families are throwing their “Gates Open” for you
Whitby, Ontario – The Durham Farm Fresh Marketing Association and Durham Region’s Economic Development and Tourism Division welcome you to a day of harvest fun and learning on the farm with the return of Gates Open on October 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Seven Durham Region farms, located in the Greenbelt, are opening their gates just for you! See what life on the farm is like; experience fun farm and family friendly activities; sample farm fresh products and treats created by farm families; and discover one of Durham’s largest industries through this unique self-guided tour. Visit Forget-Me-Not Alpacas; Gallery on the Farm; Graham Creek Farm; Lunar Rhythm Gardens; Nature’s Bounty; Ocala Winery, and Willowtree Farm. Map out your own route and stop by as many farms as you like. Enjoy the scenic views and unique topography of the Greenbelt as you travel through Durham Region. You’ll learn about agriculture, build an appreciation for Durham’s bountiful local food, and meet the passionate, dedicated people who produce it.
“Gates Open: Find Your Flavour is a great opportunity for residents and visitors to experience some of Durham’s finest farms,” said Brandon Pickard, Manager, Tourism. “Get to know our local farmers, learn the importance of agriculture in Durham Region, and discover some amazing local food.”
Visitors will have the opportunity to take part in fun and educational activities including: livestock feeding demonstrations; face painting and wagon rides–just to name a few! Each farm will showcase the best they have to offer, sharing the passion and dedication they bring to farming and their commitment to local food. Remember to bring your shopping bags and coolers to bring home some delicious local farm fresh produce, baked goods, preserves, meats, plants and more (cash only).
“We’re really excited to bring Gates Open back to Durham Region,” said Tracey Werry, Project Co-ordinator, Durham Farm Fresh Marketing Association. “Visitors near and far will discover the region’s fresh, local food; learn about where their food comes from; and have an opportunity to purchase some amazing harvest goods to fill their pantries with.”
Admission to Gates Open: Find your Flavour is free. This event is made possible with funding from the Greenbelt Foundation; which supports awareness of the Greenbelt’s agricultural and natural systems, cultural heritage and rural economy.
