Participants of two more basketball tournaments held in Oshawa urged to get tested for COVID-19
Whitby, Ontario – Durham Region Health Department is currently aware of two more basketball tournaments that were held at the Playground Global facility, 1313 Boundary Road, Oshawa, where seven cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed. Anyone who attended basketball tournaments at this facility from Aug. 13 to 15 or Aug. 20 to 23 is urged to get tested as soon as possible.
Individuals who attended the Canadian Youth Basketball League (CYBL) tournament from Aug. 13 to 15 at the Playground Global facility are urged to get tested if they have had or are currently experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19. The Health Department has been notified of three cases associated with this event and is having difficulty reaching all teams and spectators. The three cases are from Durham and Peel regions.
“We are reaching out through the media to help us make contact with anyone who may have attended the CYBL tournament,” said Dr. Robert Kyle, Durham Region Medical Officer of Health. “Since the event occurred more than 14 days ago, it is very important that individuals who attended this tournament get tested if they have had or currently have COVID-19 symptoms since attending the event.”
In addition to the CYBL event, the Health Department is aware of four other cases connected to a separate tournament also held at the Playground Global facility and is having difficulty reaching all teams and spectators. The Last 1 Standing basketball tournament was held from Aug 20 to 23. The four cases are from York, Toronto, Simcoe Muskoka and Durham Region. If you attended the Last 1 Standing basketball tournament at the Playground Global facility, you are urged to get tested immediately.
“We are also reaching out through the media to help us make contact with anyone who may have attended the Last 1 Standing tournament from Aug. 20 to 23,” explained Dr. Kyle. “Given the recent timing, individuals who attended this tournament should be tested immediately.”
All upcoming tournaments at this facility have been suspended until further notice. The Health Department is working with the facility operator and organizers to ensure that plans for future tournaments are reviewed and approved by Health Department staff.
